Identity theft is a big concern for many Americans today. There are a few basic yet dire reasons why someone might pretend to by someone else, mostly for monetary gain. Identification cards are a critical way of proving we are who we say we are, and should be carefully guarded. Most people think of things like drivers licenses and birth certificates when they think about types of identification, but there are many others.
Birth certificates, credit cards with our names on them, and passports are also identifying documents that people could use to impersonate us. And while most people probably think and worry about identity theft in the context of their personal life, not as many consider having their professional identity stolen. More and more companies require their employees to carry work identification cards, which makes it easier to see whether a person belongs in an office or not. Without this form of identification, anyone who can find a door can enter an office and cause problems. They might steal client lists and try to take a company’s business; they might steal confidential information to sell to a competitor or use for their own profit; they might even vandalize an office or destroy equipment. Even if no one ever tries to break into an office, requiring employees to wear identification can make them feel safer and provide hard evidence of security for visitors. Companies that rely on outside investors often have to demonstrate that their worksites are secure, and employee identification cards are an excellent way of displaying security.
