In today’s world, the average person probably has numerous ID cards. People carry drivers licenses or a government issued picture ID, library and credit cards with their name, and people in foreign countries even carry their passports. It used to be that people carried ID for shopping (to show with a credit card or check purchase) or traveling by plane. Today, though, more and more people have to carry special ID cards for work. It has become customary for companies to require their employees to have and display a card proving they are who they say they are. This makes it easy for security personnel and managers to know that someone belongs in a certain area. It is now common to see people in many different types of offices with lanyards around their necks, a plastic holder with their ID on the end. Others choose to clip it to a pocket of the front of their shirt. Having prominently displayed ID prevents problems in large companies, where it is virtually impossible for anyone to know all the employees. You might know most everyone in your department, but what happens when someone from another part of the company comes to your workspace? Or you might need to go somewhere else in the building for a meeting or to exchange information. ID cards facilitate this process, by allowing people in other departments to easily see that you are part of the company, even if you do not normally work in their area.
