In the past, they were most common in high security workspaces like government offices and medical facilities. These places have always handled sensitive material, whether it is tax payer information or medical records. And, of course, hospitals need to tightly control who has access to patients and medications. Now, though, more and more companies use this means of identification. Employee badges are regularly used in banks, schools, and software companies. Security is still the main reason for using employee badges, especially in schools. With recent problems in schools, it was become more important for teachers and staff to be easily identifiable. Software companies are concerned about industrial espionage, about other companies stealing their ideas and beginning stages of work.

Employee badges, most commonly a simple plastic card with the employee’s name and picture on them, are a simple solution to security problems. Many places also use this means of identification as a way of controlling who can enter parts of the company. Employee badges can include a magnetic strip that is used to unlock doors to areas of the company, so people can only enter their own workspace. This ensures that only employees can enter a company’s offices, and that employees are not allowed into areas they should not be. Many companies have accounting departments where financial records are kept; a newly-hired, low-level employee might not be seen as trustworthy enough to have access to such an area. Electronic locks in employee ID badges can keep sensitive areas safe.
