Many people have probably worked somewhere the employees had to wear company ID badges. These little pieces of plastic have become an important part of our work uniforms, with many employees today wearing them on a lanyard around their neck or clipped to a pocket. We may complain about having to wear them, but there are a number of reasons companies give them out. The most obvious reason is security; company badges let managers and other workers know that a person belongs in their workspace. This is especially important in medical facilities, where patient care or a research project might be compromised by unauthorized people.
Companies that have personal information about clients, such as doctor’s offices, mortgage companies, and accounting firms also need to be protective of their office space. Any type of business that has information like full names, social security numbers, birthdates, or a dozen other types of information has to be very careful in guarding that data. Identity theft has become disturbingly common, and companies have to prove that the will protect whatever information they are given. Even in places that do not have such information, company ID badges allow people to see that a person belongs. A card with a person’s name printed under the company name tells other workers who they are and that they are indeed an employee. In many places, the badges are as simple as that, two names on a piece of plastic, although they can be more elaborate if the company needs them to be.
